SALINAS, California, October 27, 2026. Monterey County supervisors are considering changes to the organization and staffing of the County Administrative Office’s budget and fiscal operations.
Board item RES 26-176 proposes creating a classification called Assistant County Budget Director, retitling the current County Budget Director classification as Deputy County Administrative Officer — Fiscal and reallocating a vacant Community Engagement Program Manager position to the new assistant director role.
Does the proposal create new positions?
The agenda also asks the board to increase the County Administrative Office’s authorized maximum filled staffing by one full-time-equivalent (FTE) to a total of 47.0 FTE, intended to support budget oversight and development. A separate item, RES 26-177, concerns reclassifying a Management Analyst II as Management Analyst III in economic-development administration.
These are two different staffing proposals, and an approved position does not prove that a vacancy has already been filled or establish the new employee’s final salary. Readers should inspect the salary-range attachments and the adopted county budget for the costs.
Why residents may care
Changes to budgeting leadership can affect the county’s internal financial oversight, preparation of the annual budget and administration of publicly funded projects. The measure does not by itself announce a tax increase or a cut to any service.
At publication, the October 27 meeting’s final minutes were not posted, so the reorganization should be treated as proposed until the vote is confirmed.
