SALINAS, Calif. — October 27, 2026. Natividad Medical Center is seeking authorization for a one-year medical-director services agreement with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics.

In the October 20 Monterey County Board of Supervisors agenda, A 26-434 sets a proposed contract ceiling of $873,188 for the period November 1, 2026, through October 31, 2027. The measure also allows qualifying future amendments totaling no more than 10% of the base contract amount, potentially raising the ceiling to $960,507 if approved and exercised.

What services are involved?

The county says Natividad operates a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), serving newborns who require advanced monitoring and treatment. The proposed arrangement concerns medical-director services supporting this neonatal care and the hospital’s High-Risk Infant Follow-Up (HRIF) responsibilities.

The HRIF program is designed to track and assess children whose medical conditions or experiences at birth may place them at higher risk of developmental difficulties. The county says the follow-up program is a component of Natividad’s Level III NICU operations. Families must still discuss individual eligibility, clinical recommendations, referrals and appointments with care providers.

Is this a new NICU?

No. Natividad’s Level III unit already operates. The proposed agreement concerns medical leadership, not construction of another hospital or confirmation that any specific patient care outcomes have changed.

Similarly, the contract’s ceiling is not proof that the hospital spent $873,188 on October 20. At publication, the county’s public meeting page had not supplied finalized minutes for the October 20 board meeting; final execution and payments should be verified separately.

California58 also reported the hospital’s separate trauma quality-improvement agreement. Those are different programs and should not be combined into one contract.
