SALINAS, Calif. — Hartnell College’s Child Development Center will receive $250,000 in federal funding for improvements to its outdoor learning environment, including safety changes intended to benefit young children attending the center.
U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren delivered a ceremonial check during a September 22 visit to the Salinas campus. The investment was highlighted in an October 22 report from the Salinas Valley Tribune.
Safer outdoor learning space
The center provides preschool services for children ages 2 to 5, combining early learning with social, health and nutritional support. Young children spend a substantial part of their daily sessions outside, making safe access to outdoor equipment particularly important.
According to the report, the improvements will address a climbing structure installed in 1995. Children currently need to cross a bicycle path to reach that equipment, a concern that the redesign aims to eliminate. The changes also are intended to create more opportunities for gardening, outdoor art, imaginative play and hands-on learning.
Funding history
The renovation was listed in Congresswoman Lofgren’s fiscal year 2026 community project funding requests, where Hartnell College described the need for safety upgrades and better learning conditions.
The $250,000 award is smaller than the $1 million requested. Residents should not assume the entire renovation is funded or completed; construction timing and the full project budget require separate confirmation from the college.
Why this matters for Salinas families
Affordable, high-quality early childhood education supports both children’s development and working or studying parents. For Hartnell, the center also forms part of a broader educational setting for students interested in early childhood education.
Hartnell’s campus is located at 411 Central Avenue, Salinas. Families seeking enrollment or service details should use the college’s official website rather than rely on the project’s funding announcement.
