SALINAS, Calif. — Salinas has approved approximately $4.4 million in grant support for its Fire Department, with plans to hire 12 firefighters and restore a dedicated commercial fire inspection program.

The Salinas City Council approved the grants October 27 in a 6-0-1 vote, according to Monterey County Now’s reporting.

Additional personnel

A Federal Emergency Management Agency Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant, valued at roughly $3.3 million, is intended to pay for 12 additional firefighters over three years.

Department officials hope to raise daily staffing from 26 firefighters to 30. Adding employees may also reduce overtime demands and help crews assemble more quickly for major incidents. Improved response times are a goal, however, not a guaranteed outcome.

Inspections for commercial properties

Approximately $1.1 million in additional grant funding will help restart a dedicated commercial fire inspection program. The plan includes three inspectors and an administrative analyst, according to the local report.

Inspection work is intended to identify fire-safety hazards before emergencies happen. It can include assessing emergency access, exits and compliance with fire prevention requirements.

Long-term funding still matters

Federal grants provide temporary funding, and city leaders will eventually need to address what happens after the staffing award’s three-year period ends. Residents should distinguish between authorization to receive money, successful recruitment and actual improvements in emergency response.

An additional contribution of almost $33,000 from Cal Water was also described for medical airway equipment.
