SALINAS, Calif. — Families welcoming a newborn at Salinas Valley Health are receiving 400 free diapers per baby as part of California’s Golden State Start initiative.
The medical center says it began offering the benefit October 1, 2026. The supplies are provided to families around the time of discharge, helping reduce an immediate household expense during the baby’s first months.
Who qualifies?
According to Salinas Valley Health’s announcement and the nonprofit Baby2Baby, the program has no income limit, application or paperwork requirement for families giving birth at participating hospitals. Each newborn is allocated 400 diapers, so families with twins or other multiple births can receive the allotment for each baby.
Baby2Baby administers Golden State Start for California’s Department of Health Care Access and Information. Hospitals join the program and distribute diapers directly to patients.
Not every hospital is participating yet
Golden State Start is being rolled out across California. The state has described an ambition to reach newborns statewide, but families should not assume every birthing hospital is already supplying diapers. Prospective parents can ask their hospital’s maternity team about participation.
The program provides diapers rather than cash and does not guarantee additional shipments after the first 400. Families needing more help can ask their care team about local resources or contact 211 California.
Local maternity services
Salinas Valley Health offers maternity and newborn services, including a neonatal intensive care unit and a dedicated obstetric emergency department. Its public announcement highlights the practical value of sending families home with essential supplies as they adapt to caring for a new child.
