SALINAS, Calif. — Monterey County’s October 27 Board of Supervisors agenda includes a proposal for up to $2.2 million in countywide translation and interpretation agreements with eight vendors over three years.
The contracts, proposed under item 26-901 / RFP No. 10989, would allow county departments to obtain language services as needed from November 2, 2026 through November 1, 2029. The agenda lists possible extensions for two additional one-year periods, and qualifying amendments that could raise the total cumulative ceiling to $2.42 million.
Which firms are named?
The eight proposed providers are Language Line Services, International Translation Company, Lionbridge Technologies, TransPerfect Translations International, Daniel Shamebo Sabore doing business as Languages Translation Services, Avantpage, Piedmont Global and Hanna Interpreting Services.
The $2.2 million is a total ceiling shared across proposed agreements; it is not the amount promised to each contractor or an assertion that all the money has already been spent. The agreements are to be used on an as-needed basis.
Why it matters for local families
Monterey County public services touch residents who speak different languages at home. Interpretation may help people understand government communications and interactions where language access is needed. The proposed vendor list itself does not verify which individual languages are covered at every location or guarantee a translator can be obtained instantly.
Residents seeking language assistance with an appointment should contact the relevant county agency and request an interpreter or translated information. Eligibility for a specific language service depends on the agency and applicable legal requirements.
